Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s words, “People should not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character,” have always inspired Dr. Zarzar. In his work with IPENO Foundation, he has strived to create an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and respected. This role mirrors his goal to enhance dental institutions by fostering nurturing environments where students and faculty thrive in synchrony.

In an era where the promise of oral health equity remains an elusive dream for over 100 million people in the U.S., a significant portion of the population grapples with inadequate access to dental care, leading to severe oral health disparities. These disparities not only diminish the quality of life for millions but also pose substantial economic burdens on the U.S. healthcare system due to the reliance on emergency care for preventable dental conditions. This crisis of untreated dental caries and limited preventive care access illuminates a broader narrative of systemic inequities that demand urgent attention and reform. Thus, “the most profound form of discrimination is the unequal access to healthcare.”

The Jesuit principle of ‘cura personalis‘ – care for the whole person – has been a cornerstone of Dr. Zarzar’s professional philosophy since the beginning of his career. He believes that true healing involves addressing not just physical health but also mental and social well-being. This holistic approach is something Dr. Zarzar looks forward to bringing to U.S. Dental Education, where he can help prepare students to be compassionate, skilled-qualified dental professionals, integrating comprehensive oral rehabilitation beyond mere ‘teeth-care’ to embrace comprehensive ‘patient-care.’

In his role as Program Director at Camarlengo Dental Institute in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Dr. Zarzar has continued to innovate and lead. He has successfully developed comprehensive dental programs that blend advanced education with community service, ensuring that dental care is accessible to all. His work in creating the Community Dentistry program from the ground up has had a profound impact on minority communities, addressing critical oral health issues and promoting health equity.
